hvac Terms You Need to Know

Understanding key HVAC terms can help you make more informed decisions about your heating and cooling options.

BTU (British Thermal Unit)
Measures a furnace’s heating capacity, indicating how much heat the furnace can produce.
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)
Represents the furnace’s efficiency, showing the percentage of fuel converted into usable heat. Higher AFUE means greater efficiency.
Heat Exchanger
The component where combustion gasses transfer heat to the air circulating through the home.
Blower Motor
The motor that moves air through the duct system and into the rooms, distributing heat throughout the home.
Limit Switch
A safety device in the furnace that shuts down the burner if the heat exchanger gets too hot. It also regulates when the blower fan turns on and off, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
Zoning System
A system that allows different areas (zones) of the home to be heated individually, improving comfort and efficiency by directing heat where it’s needed most.

Frequently asked Questions

What size furnace do I need for my home?

The right furnace size depends on factors like your home’s square footage, insulation, and layout. A professional assessment will ensure you get the right capacity for efficient, effective heating.

What are the financing options for a new furnace?

ATEL Air offers financing options with low monthly payments and competitive interest rates, making it easier to afford a high-efficiency furnace upgrade.

Is a heat pump a good alternative to a furnace?

Yes, a heat pump can be an excellent option, especially if you want both heating and cooling in one system. Cold climate heat pumps are designed to perform well in low temperatures, making them a viable choice for many homes.

How long does the typical gas furnace last?

Typically, the average lifespan of a gas furnace is between 15 and 20 years. This can be extended, however, if proper care is taken of it. If your furnace is over 15 years old, it may be time to start looking into replacement options to avoid a complete system failure and being left without heat.

Factors That Can Affect a Furnace’s Lifespan

The following elements can influence the longevity of your furnace:

The Age of the Furnace

The newer the furnace, the longer it is likely to last. With advancements in technology, new furnaces are now built with features that help safeguard the components and increase their efficiency. It’s best to consider replacing your furnace if it is over 10 to 15 years old.

Furnace Installation

Having your furnace installed correctly is key in determining its efficiency, energy usage, and overall lifespan. Improper installation can cause the furnace to work harder, resulting in higher energy costs, faster component wear and tear, and breakdowns. Be sure to have a qualified, certified heating and cooling contractor handle the installation of any new furnace.

Furnace Upkeep

Having regular maintenance performed on your furnace can significantly improve its lifespan. We suggest having maintenance performed annually to reduce the chances of a malfunction or poor operation, which can speed up the wearing down of components. Also, be sure to regularly change your furnace filters to prevent overheating and extra strain on the furnace. Pro Tip: Many furnace warranties require an annual maintenance appointment to remain in effect.

when to Repair or Replace a Furnace

Does it make more financial sense to buy a new furnace or repair an old one? This is one of the most common questions we get.

Here are some questions to ask that can help you decide.

How Old is Your Furnace?
Are Repair Costs Adding Up?
What are Your Energy Bills Like?
Are There Cold Spots in Your Home?

Some quick troubleshooting steps you can try include:

  • Secure the front panel door.
  • Replace or clean the air filter.
  • Open all air duct vents.
  • Double-check that nothing is blocking your furnace’s outside fresh air intake (e.g., snow or leaves).

If none of the above solve the problem, then it’s time to call us.

How it Works

Installing today’s high-efficiency gas furnaces is a bit different than the simpler mid-efficiency furnaces permitted in Ontario before 2009.

Gas supply lines and exhaust venting have to meet current safety standards. Condensation has to be redirected to your cleanout. We could go on about the technical details, but the important things to know are:

  • ATEL Air only employs licensed gas fitters who love what they do.
  • As Certified Trane Dealers, we receive extra training on the fine points of installing Trane Furnaces.

Our Organized Installation Process

You’ll know what to expect every step of the way.

  • We’ll let you know the names of your technicians and send photos in advance. We also send a sheet explaining what the steps are for the installation process.
  • We’ll arrive on schedule with everything we need to get started.
  • We protect your home with tarps, and wear booties while walking to and from the work area.
  • Once your new furnace is fully installed, we’ll review the system with you so you can control it.
  • We’ll call you a few days later to make sure everything’s OK and no questions have come up.

If you have questions at any step along the way, feel free to ask! We’re proud of what we do and we love to explain things.
