Getting the Right Furnace – Not Just Any Furnace
You can’t just plug any furnace into any home and expect perfect results. You need to match the furnace to the home, and to the family that lives there.
One of the most important parts of getting a furnace that heats well, heats efficiently, and lasts for years is getting the right size of furnace.
- If it’s too small, you won’t get enough heating power.
- If your furnace is too big it won’t work efficiently. It will also wear itself out sooner because it turns itself on and off too often.
ATEL Air performs the detailed heat gain/loss calculations that are needed to ensure your furnace is just right.
Right Efficiency Level
Since 2009, Ontario’s minimum efficiency standard for furnaces is 90%. That means that 90% of the fuel is used to create heat for your home, and 10% goes out the exhaust vent. That may sound like a lot, but it’s a huge improvement over the less efficient furnaces available even a decade ago.
For some people 90% is fine because they’re on a tight budget. But others want to do better and ensure they get the most for their gas dollar. Higher efficiency furnaces can cost more to buy, but they save on fuel costs every month for the 15-20 year lifetime of the furnace. In the long run it pays off.
Right Comfort Control
Most homes have natural warm and cool spots due to window size, sun exposure, insulation quality, or other factors. For some people that’s no problem, but for others it’s an annoyance. Smoothing out these temperature variations involves getting a furnace with a variable speed gas valve and blower motor, and can involve specialized zoning-compatible ductwork too.
Let your ATEL Air consultant know what your priorities are, and we’ll help you find what you’re looking for.
Cost is Not the Same as Value
When you’re shopping around for quotes, keep in mind that the lowest price isn’t always the best deal.
Some contractors try to keep prices low by doing less than they should. Make sure you get all the details so you know exactly what’s included and what’s not included. As today’s furnaces are smaller than older models, ensure that any needed modifications to your ductwork are included. Don’t forget to ask for pictures of previous jobs – they’ll show who cares about the details.
Installing today’s high-efficiency gas furnaces is a bit different than the simpler mid-efficiency furnaces permitted in Ontario before 2009.
Gas supply lines and exhaust venting have to meet current safety standards. Condensation has to be redirected to your cleanout. We could go on about the technical details, but the important things to know are:
- ATEL Air only employs licensed gas fitters who love what they do.
- As Certified Trane Dealers, we receive extra training on the fine points of installing Tranes.
Organized Installation Process
You’ll know what to expect every step of the way.
We’ll let you know the names of your technicians and send photos in advance. We also send a sheet explaining what the steps are for the installation process.
We’ll arrive on schedule with everything we need to get started.
We protect your home with tarps, and wear booties while walking to and from the work area.
Once your new furnace is fully installed, we’ll review the system with you so you can control it.
We’ll call you a few days later to make sure everything’s OK and no questions have come up.
If you have questions at any step along the way, feel free to ask! We’re proud of what we do and we love to explain things.
Your Ductwork Makes a Difference
Not all ductwork systems are designed equally. They have a big impact on whether or not your furnace is able to meet its potential efficiency rating. Did you know:
- You should NOT have to turn up the TV when the furnace or AC comes on? It should be whisper quiet.
- Every room should be about the same temperature?
- The ducting delivers the heating and cooling to your home? If the ducting is poorly designed…it will be noisy, you will have cold and hot areas in your home AND your energy bills will be higher because the ducting is restricting air flow. Duct design is a weak link in this industry.
ATEL Air is certified to design and install ductwork properly for new builds or your current home – we even have a sheet metal worker on staff who specializes in meeting the needs of our customers.
We can also install ductwork with special dampers that creates individually controllable heating zones. This allows you to get more even results throughout your home, or allow family members with warmer or cooler preferences get what they want in their favourite rooms.
